HiCo LoCo magnetic stripe

According to ISO standard magnetic cards are referred as HiCo (high coercivity) with 2750-4000 Oe (Oe=Oerstedt which defines the auxilary of the magnetic field) or LoCo (low coercivity) with 300-600 Oe. According to this standard a magnetic card has a recording density of approx. 1224 Bit on three tracks. The tracks 1 +2 are specified for card reading. The track 3 ist specified for reading and storing data.

-Track 1: 76 characters (alphanumeric 7 Bit/character)

-Track 2: 37 characters (alphanumeric 5 Bit/character)

-Track 3: 104 characters (alphanumeric 5 Bit/character)

The difference between HiCo and LoCo is the following:

-LoCo: Is the standard and data stored on the card can be removed through external influence of a magnetic field.

-HiCo: The data stored on the card can´t be removed, in no case with a customary magnetic head.
